History

Cumming, Iowa, is one of the smallest incorporated towns in Warren County but carries a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. Named after a railroad official, the town served as a key stop along the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. It remained a small farming community for much of its existence but gained recognition as the hometown of former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin. Today, Cumming is best known for its quiet rural atmosphere, strong community ties, and the Great Western Trail that passes through it.

Railroad Land

Cyrus Callison sells land to the railroad, setting the stage for Cumming's founding.

1888

City Founding

Cumming is officially established with an initial layout of 24 lots.

1908

Rural Hub

The town emerges as a local hub with essential businesses.

1968

Rail Service Ends

The last train runs through Cumming, ending its rail era.

1992

Bike Trail

An old railroad line is transformed into the Great Western Bike Trail.

2000

Suburban Growth

Expansion from Des Moines revitalizes the community.

Middlebrook Farm

Middlebrook’s two-acre town garden offers a diverse range of organic produce, from melons and tomatoes to sweet corn and pumpkins. With seasonal changes, frequent visits are a must to discover new, delicious offerings at our self-service Farm Stand! A newly installed high tunnel greenhouse completes year-round gardening capabilities at the Middlebrook Farm.

Middlebrook Mercantile

Built in 1900, this historic one-room schoolhouse once provided kindergarten through high school education. Restored and preserved to maintain its original character by Diligent Development, The Merc now serves as a centerpiece for the Middlebrook Agrihood commercial area, just as it once served as a centerpiece for the rural town of Cumming.

The Merc offers a full espresso bar, craft cocktails and beer, specialty wines, grab-and-go eats, as well as locally-produced home goods and groceries. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a drink, meet up with friends, listen to the live local music events, be a digital nomad, or to browse the unique offerings found in the store.
