Looking for a day trip that’s full of charm, flavor, and local discoveries? Let me introduce you to two small towns just south of Des Moines that deliver way more than you’d expect, Norwalk and Cumming.

Start your adventure in Cumming, where small-town vibes meet big personalities. Head to Middlebrook Mercantile, an old schoolhouse-turned-coffee shop by day and cocktail lounge by night. Sip a locally crafted latte or come back later for a glass of wine or a signature cocktail under the twinkle lights. Right next door is Middlebrook Farm, where you can stroll the meadow, pick your own flowers, or catch a seasonal event like Fridays at the Farm — picture live music, food trucks, and fresh farm air.

While you’re in town, don’t miss Wilson’s Orchard & Farm. This spot is pure Iowa magic — rows of apple trees, wood-fired pizza on the patio, hard cider flights, and a gift shop packed with local treats, kitchen goods, and seasonal finds. Whether you’re there for apple picking or just to wander, Wilson’s is the kind of place you’ll want to linger.

If you’re a fan of spirits, Iowa Distilling Company is a must-stop. Step inside this welcoming distillery to sample small-batch bourbon, whiskey, vodka, and moonshine. Stick around for one of their trivia nights or live music events, or just relax with a drink and soak up the laid-back vibe. Either way donʼt leave without trying some Prairie Fire.

And before you leave Cumming, grab a bite at The Chicken, a beloved local roadhouse famous for its crispy fried chicken, hearty sandwiches, and fun, casual atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to refuel before heading to your next stop. On the way to Norwalk your next stop could be Ted Lareʼs Garden Center. Not only do they carry houseplants and everything you need for your outdoor landscaping but their gift shop is absolutely incredible. From terrariums to gifts, home decor, dry flower bar and more. It 's truly worth the stop!

Just a short drive away in Norwalk, you’ll find a fresh mix of dining and shopping. Make your way to Cooper’s Central Table & Cocktails, where cozy meets classy. Their menu is packed with elevated comfort food — think steak DeBurgo, craft burgers, fresh salads — and the cocktails are reason enough to visit. Or if you have the kids along grab a bite at Mullets, enjoy a bite with the kids while they enjoy the arcade.

No visit to Norwalk is complete without treating yourself at Wendy’s Ice Cream Shop. This local institution serves up old-school cones, sundaes, shakes, and banana splits — the kind of place that makes you feel like a kid again.

Ready for some shopping? Pop into Ember Market, a beautifully curated boutique offering home décor, gifts, clothing, and accessories. Then swing by Bellflower Florist & Gifts, where you’ll find fresh flowers, candles, gourmet baskets, and seasonal treasures — perfect for picking up something special to remember your visit.

Cumming and Norwalk are the kinds of places that invite you to slow down, explore, and enjoy. Whether you’re here for the food, the drinks, the shopping, or just the small-town charm, you’ll leave feeling like you uncovered one of Iowa’s best-kept secrets.

So next weekend, why not skip the usual routine and take a little road trip? Cumming and Norwalk are waiting — and trust me, you’re going to love what you find.
